Charming side streets, a long shopping street closed for traffic and a mall. You can easily spend hours shopping in Herning.

The approx. 900 meter long main shopping street in Herning city stretches from Bredgade in the west to where Østergade reaches the Conference Hall (Herning Kongrescenter) in the eastern part of the city.

You find a varied selection of shops, not only on the main street, but also on the side streets like Søndergade, Skolegade and Fonnesbechgade. The city square is right in the center, and a few steps further down Østergade you find the awarded library. The building is worth a visit for it's unique architecture, if not for finding a book, reading a magazine or having a coffee in the café.

Just outside the library, at Tinghuspladsen, different events are held from time to time and every Tuesday and Saturday there is a small local food market.

The Herning Mall (Herning Centret) is placed 2 km. east of the city center and has 75 stores and numerous cafes and restaurants.

Culture and attractions

Herning has a rich cultural life. Whether you are looking for theater, concerts or museums, Herning has it.

With several renowned art museums, Herning has most art per citizen in Denmark.

The theatres in Herning arrange traditional and experimental performances all year - as well as ballet, opera and musicals. Several stages offer music experiences in every genre.

Jyllands Park Zoo is 15 kilometers west of the city centre. Children will be thrilled spending a day in Denmark's biggest indoor activity park Baboon City. Or go to Legoland only 40 minutes drive from Herning.

Active leisure and nature experiences

Herning boasts many facilities for indoor sports and a great natural environment for activities outside.

Herning and the nearby town of Ikast have some of the top football, handball and ice hockey clubs in Denmark. The area is known for elite sports and there will very often be a top game to watch in the area.

There is also a lot of sports and activities for the masses - in Herning you can do almost any kind of sport, and we have the most sport halls per citizen. Sport in Herning - and in Denmark - is to a large extent based on volunteers, and many of our more than 400 clubs or associations are strongly rooted in the local society. Therefore, to really get to know the Danes, joining a club may be the way. If you are having trouble finding the right association for you, you can contact Herning Idrætsråd.

Herning also have many free facilities and places where you can pay a day rate. For example, swim the new 50-meter lanes at Herning Svømmehal,- or swim outside in the summer, swim or play squash at DGI-Huset. You can also climb or go skating at Terminalen.Or go canoeing or kayaking at one of the rivers or lakes.

For a run or walk there are many options. Go to for example Fuglsang Lake, where you can also use the outdoor fitness equipment.
