Herning Municipality has 33 public schools and 7 private schools. 15 of the public schools go from 0. grade up to to 9. grade (6 to 15 years). The remaining schools go from 0. to 6. Grade, and the pupils then go to one of the 15 schools for the final years. 10. grade is optional in Denmark and is offered at Herningsholm Erhvervsskole.
Herning focuses on a positive learning environment and value the physical environment as a basis for learning. Since 2000 four new schools have been built in Herning Municipality.

Receiving classes (modtageklasser)
School-age children who cannot speak Danish will receive basic Danish language tuition. This takes place in 'receiving classes' two places in Herning until the children are ready to integrate in a typical class.
When you move to Herning with bilingual children, you will be connected with a school consultant who will asses the language skills of your child and ensure the right school placement.
In Ikast, approx 10 kilometers east of Herning city, there is a private international school.
The schools have various options for after school care and clubs.
Herning Municipality offers special talent classes at a department under Brændgårdskolen from 7th grade for young people with a special sport talent or musical talent. The talent classes are physically based in Holing, at Sportcenter Herning.
The sport or music association that the pupil is part of recommends him or her to be accepted in a talent class.
Language - Learn Danish
In Herning the Danish classes are offered at the language center, Sprogcenter Midt Herning.
A few weeks after you have moved to Herning from another country, you will receive a letter with information about language classes.
Sprogcenter Midt offers Danish classes at different levels and for different target groups. They also offer courses in other subjects like math and IT, and they host different events and activities where you can practise your language skills.
